Test a smaller daily commitment, including the tradeoff
How Duolingo approached retention.
What they did
Duolingo separated a learner’s streak from their larger daily goal, allowing one lesson to maintain the streak. It compared the new approach with the existing combined mechanics in an A/B test.
Reported outcome
The company reported a 3.3% relative increase in day-14 retention, but fewer learners reached their daily goals. The result is specific to that experiment.
An idea to test, from Afterlaunch
Lowering the habit threshold may improve return visits while weakening another outcome; measure both.
Small experiment: Test a smaller first repeat action and track return rate together with completion of the user’s substantive goal.
A company’s reported outcome doesn’t prove one tactic caused it. Treat this as a hypothesis.
